Why does friction produce heat ?

Friction creates heat because when two surfaces rub against each other, their microscopic irregularities collide and deform, converting mechanical energy into thermal energy. The kinetic energy of the moving surfaces is transferred to the molecules at the contact points, causing them to vibrate faster and increase in temperature. This process is amplified by factors like surface roughness, pressure, and speed, which increase the intensity of molecular interactions.
